Bordered by Houston Street (pronounced House-ton), Crosby Street, Sixth Avenue and Canal Street, Soho provides a great place to work and a perfect place to play. Soho was the first neighborhood in Manhattan to be named by an acronym, and literally means South of Houston. The name also pays homage to the posh London shopping district known also as Soho.

Originally Soho was known for its cast iron architecture, and has always been a pride of Manhattan because of the local production of materials provided for the buildings. During the 1960’s plans were set in place to build elevated high ways through Soho. However, residents and preservationists halted the construction by land marking many building that would have been torn down for the project. Today many of those early buildings have become historic landmarks and must see locations for tourists and Manhattanites alike. In the 1970’s artists began migrating to the area overtaking the historic buildings and rejuvenating the apartments in Soho.

Because of Soho’s tremendous past, it has become an upscale neighborhood and a very desirable place to live. Today apartments in Soho are a well-balanced mixture of post-war, pre-war and loft buildings. Many loft buildings in this downtown hot spot follow a very modern aesthetic with clean lines, and industrial beauty. Large windows provide gorgeous light to many of the converted loft apartments. These trendy homes have been renovated and retrofitted to accommodate their new residents.

Shopping is at a peak in Soho. Satellite designer stores in old industrial building provide the perfect place to set up shop. (It’s not uncommon to see models hustling through the streets as the go from designer to designers). Stores in the area include Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Kate Spade, Swiss Army, Coach, Louis Vinton, Puma and Hogan. Fine dining also has invaded the neighborhood and gives residents a chance to sample some of the finest eats in Manhattan. Soho Park, Mooncake Foods (Voted to be the best Asian Cuisine in the city), Salt and The Cub Room all blend atmosphere with edibles that are to die for.

Of course, Soho also has some of the best off-Broadway theaters in Manhattan. Innovative, provocative shows can be seen for half the price of a Broadway ticket.
